A mango sapling has caught buyers' eyes at the tree fair in Faridpur. Many people are crowding in just to take a look at it, and its asking price is Tk 50,000. Why is one sapling so expensive?
Afzal Hossain, manager of Faridpur Nursery, which brought the sapling to the fair, told Jago News that it is a foreign mango of Thailand's "Chiang Mai" variety. Each fruit weighs about 700-800 grams and can reach one kilogram, and the mango sells at Tk 4,000 a kg.
At the fair on Brahmo Samaj Road, several nurseries have set up stalls selling different kinds of saplings. Among them, the mango sapling on the Faridpur Nursery stall is being offered at Tk 50,000.
Visitors drawn by the fruit
Local resident Rezaul Karim told Jago News that colourful mangoes hang in bunches from the sapling at the Faridpur Nursery stall. The fruits look attractive and are long in shape, and they are drawing people's attention.
Md Shahinuzzaman Khan, who came to see the sapling, told Jago News: "I heard the news and came to see the foreign mango tree. The tree is small but the mangoes are quite big. It was nice to see it with my own eyes. It would have been good to buy it and plant it at home, but the price is high."
Why the price is so high
Afzal Hossain said the nursery's owner, Akkas Hossain, a resident of the Shobharampur area, collected the tree from abroad. It is a Chiang Mai mango tree from Thailand, about three years old. The fruit is very tasty and juicy, each mango grows up to about a foot long, and its colour is largely pink.
He added that the tree has borne about 25-30 mangoes this year and will bear more in future. Each fruit weighs about 700-800 grams and can reach a kilogram, and the mango sells at Tk 4,000 a kg. All this together is why the sapling is priced at Tk 50,000, the highest of any fruit tree at the fair.
Agriculturist Md Rafiqul Islam, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Faridpur, said that as far as he knows the mango is named after the Chiang Mai area of Thailand. Mangoes of this variety are a little larger than local ones, look attractive and taste sweet, and the variety also yields quite well.
