A mobile court has sentenced two young men, Md Imamul Molla, 20, and Abdur Rahim Molla, 21, to one year's simple imprisonment each for trapping birds in Saltha upazila of Faridpur.

Upazila assistant commissioner (land) Md Salauddin Ayubi handed down the sentences at around 8.30pm on Sunday 25 December.

Imamul Molla is the son of Md Majed Molla of Bhabukdia village in Gatti union of the upazila, and Abdur Rahim is the son of Sadek Molla of the same village.

Saltha police station sub-inspector (SI) Md Awlad Hossain told Jago News that the two were trapping birds at Char Kamdia field in Bhawal union. Acting on a call to 999, a police team raided the spot and detained them, recovering five live migratory birds. Assistant commissioner (land) Md Salauddin Ayubi then came to the scene, held a mobile court and sentenced each to a year in jail.

Md Salauddin Ayubi said bird hunting is a punishable offence. The two hunters, Imamul Molla and Rahim Molla, were each given a year's simple imprisonment under the Wildlife Conservation and Security Act for hunting migratory birds, and each was also fined Tk 1,000. The rescued birds were later released, he said.
