Mango trees flower, and the flowers turn into mangoes. That is the normal course. But a mango tree in Faridpur shows a different picture: countless mango blossoms have emerged not from the branches but from the stalk of a mango itself, and those blossoms have set tiny mango fruitlets.
The sight was seen in a mango orchard near Dhalar Mor in Faridpur. The orchard belongs to Dulal Hossain Rubel, a brick-kiln businessman who lived abroad for a long time.
Four years ago Dulal Hossain set up a fruit orchard on his farmhouse as a hobby, planting more than a hundred mango trees along with some other fruit saplings. This year the trees have borne plenty of mangoes. But among them all, one tree of the American Red Palmer variety has surprised everyone: after one of its mangoes grew large, new blossom sprouted again from the mouth of the mango's stalk.
"Never seen it in 76 years"
"I was very surprised to see new blossom coming again at the mouth of the mango's stalk," said orchard owner Dulal Hossain Rubel. "Allah can do anything if He wishes, and this proves it. To me it seems a sign from Allah."
He added that he bought this Red Palmer mango tree at a tree fair four years ago, and it fruited the very next year. The unusual event happened this year.
Rubel's wife, Syeda Sanjida Mishu, said: "It is astonishing. Now we have to see how big these fruitlets can grow. If they become full mangoes, that will be another amazing event."
Local resident Syed Mostafa Ali said: "Blossom has come on the mango's stalk, and small fruitlets are coming out of that blossom. This is a blessing from Allah. In my 76 years I have never seen or heard of such a thing."
A botanist's explanation
Deb Narayan Roy, a professor in the botany department at Government Rajendra College, said that in the language of plant science this is called "embryogenesis", which in Bengali is called "bahubhrunata" (polyembryony). It is an embryonic process through which an embryo forms and develops. It often happens when hormones are applied in excessive doses for extra yield, he said.
