The Faridpur district unit of Chhatra Dal has run an unusual programme to create a safe shelter for migratory birds, hanging clay pots in trees as nests.

Under the slogan "Birds protect the balance of the environment; come forward to protect them", more than 50 clay pots were placed in trees of various species on and around the Government Rajendra College campus in Faridpur on the morning of Monday (2 December).

The initiative was taken in memory of Mahidul Islam, publicity secretary of the Faridpur district Chhatra Dal. It was joined by district Chhatra Dal joint organising secretary M Mamun Rahman, school affairs secretary Mehedi Hasan Rimon, metropolitan Chhatra Dal joint organising secretary Arian Limon, district Chhatra Dal member Mahim, and college students Nayan, Shihab, Apon, Sabbir and Rakib, among many others.

Leaders and activists of the district Chhatra Dal said birds are an essential part of the environment, and ensuring they have safe homes and places to live is everyone's duty in keeping the environment in balance. Birds are an essential beauty of nature and an important representative of biodiversity, they said.

They added that the clay pots will protect birds from storms, rain and cold, while helping to keep the environment in balance and supporting breeding. They will try to spread the initiative gradually to districts and upazilas.

M Mamun Rahman, joint organising secretary of the district Chhatra Dal, said birds come to Faridpur from various places at home and abroad in winter, and reliable homes for them have been made in trees at Government Rajendra College.
