Officials must work competitively to conserve the environment for national development, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin has said. Government allocations must be put to the best possible use for environmental protection and tree planting, he said.

The minister was speaking on Tuesday after handing out prizes to officials who took top places in training, in the conference room of the environment ministry.

He said officials must carry out their duties through positive competition while maintaining the quality of their work, and must apply the knowledge gained in training in their careers to ensure public service.

Among forest project directors and officials, first prize went to Govinda Roy, director of the forest department's Sufal project. Second prize went to Mohammad Aminul Islam, conservator of forests for the Bogura circle, and Toufiqul Islam, divisional forest officer in Sylhet. Third place went to Md Abu Nasar Uddin, private secretary to the deputy minister, and Dr Moriyam Akter, assistant chief conservator of forests.
