Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin has instructed Forest Department officials to plant more fruit trees to end the food shortage faced by wildlife.
The minister said food for wildlife is provided through various projects, but this is no permanent solution because the shortage returns once a project ends. In areas such as Char Mugaria in Madaripur, where monkeys and other wildlife need regular food, more fruit trees suited to wildlife must be planted, he said.
The minister gave the instruction to the Forest Department on Tuesday, joining virtually from his official residence, during discussion of the project to modernise the Char Mugaria Eco Park in Madaripur district at a meeting in the ministry's conference room to review progress on the Annual Development Programme.
Other projects
The minister said the re-excavation of ponds and beels in the haor area must be finished on time. He called for work to be done to a good standard on the Sheikh Russel Aviary and Eco Park at Rangunia in Chattogram, on creating a green belt, ecosystem restoration and eco-tourism development in Cox's Bazar district, and on reforestation and infrastructure development in the Sylhet Forest Division.
He also instructed the chief conservator of forests to take the necessary steps, as promised, to build eco parks at Jaldhaka in Nilphamari, Satkania in Chattogram and Habirbari in Bhaluka.
Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar, Secretary Farhina Ahmed, Additional Secretary (Development) Fahmida Khanam, Department of Environment Director General Abdul Hamid and Chief Conservator of Forests Md Amir Hosain Chowdhury attended the meeting, along with heads of various offices, project directors and senior ministry officials.
Earlier, the minister opened the distribution of free seed and fertiliser under an incentive programme for small and marginal farmers in Juri upazila, Moulvibazar district. Each of the 900 beneficiary farmers will receive 5 kg of seed, 10 kg of DAP and 10 kg of MoP fertiliser for one bigha of land.
