Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has held its Fruit Festival 2024.
The festival ran from 10:30am to 1pm on Saturday, 6 July, in DRU's Nasrul Hamid auditorium. The lively festival of tasty, juicy fruit featured 19 kinds, including mango, jackfruit, pineapple, jujube, karamcha, pomelo, banana, star fruit, hog plum, guava, latkan and tamarind.
Agriculture Ministry Secretary Wahida Akter attended as chief guest. The special guests were Dr Mehedi Masud, director of the Year-Round Fruit Production for Nutrition Improvement Project, and Mohammad Arifur Rahman, director of the Exportable Mango Production Project. Former DRU president Shahjahan Sardar and senior member Rafiqul Islam Ratan also spoke.
Secretary predicts self-sufficiency in fruit
Wahida Akter said Bangladesh has become self-sufficient in rice production and will soon be self-sufficient in fruit too. Five years from now, mango, jackfruit and pineapple will be available all 365 days of the year, she said, and the agriculture ministry is working towards that goal.
Praising journalists' honesty and courage in their work, the agriculture secretary added that media workers must play a more responsible role when reporting on the agriculture ministry. Journalists always offer constructive criticism and fact-based reporting, she said.
The event was presided over by DRU president Syed Shukur Ali Shuvo. Joint secretary Md Mizanur Rahman (Mizan Rahman) gave the welcome speech, and welfare secretary Tanvir Ahmed hosted the programme.
Also present were DRU finance secretary Md Zakir Hussain, organising secretary Khalid Saifullah, office secretary Rafiq Rafi, IT and training secretary Md Rashim (Rashim Molla), sports secretary Md Mahbubur Rahman, cultural secretary Md Monowar Hossain, entertainment secretary Mohammad Salim Ullah (Mezbah), and executive members Md Habibur Rahman (Habib Rahman), Muhibbullah Muhib, Rafiq Mridha, Delwar Hossain Mohin and Md Shariful Islam.
Former DRU presidents Sakhawat Hossain Badsha, Shahed Chowdhury and Rafiqul Islam Azad, former general secretaries Nurul Islam Hasib and Mainul Hasan Sohel, and other members of the organisation were also present.
