An organisation called Save World Life and Nature (SWAN) has rescued a Russell's viper from Dohar in Dhaka.

The snake was rescued after 9:30am on Sunday (29 June), Adnan Azad, the organisation's founding president, confirmed to Jagonews.

He told Jagonews: "We got the news in the morning and three of us went to Dohar. We rescued the snake from there. We will release it on the Forest Department's instructions."

The venomous Russell's viper, known locally as chandrabora or ulubora, had almost disappeared. In the last few years, and especially in 2024, it spread panic everywhere. It was once seen in the country's Barind region, but in 2024 reports spread of it being found in 32 districts.

Experts say the snake's range has grown because animals that eat snakes are under threat. The Venom Research Centre of Chittagong Medical College said last year that Russell's vipers were seen in 32 districts between 2013 and May 2024. Its data show the snake's spread increasing since 2013: it was seen in nine districts between 2013 and 2016, the number rose to 11 in 2018, researchers at the centre recorded it in 23 districts in 2023, and by May 2024 it had been seen in 32 districts.
