Bones wear with age, but young people are now suffering neck and back pain too. Mumbai orthopaedic doctor Zahir Abbas Merchant blames long unbroken hours at the computer, poor sitting posture and working with the laptop in the wrong position. A report on Anandabazar Online sets out his advice.
The neck exists to hold up the head and turn it, the doctor says. Sitting for hours with the neck in one position, and a wrong one at that, naturally brings headaches, neck pain and shoulder pain, and the habit can also distort the natural shape of the spine and neck.
His advice: keep the computer or laptop screen level with the eyes so you do not work with your head bent for hours. Sit with the back and spine straight, though not rigid, in a comfortable position. Keep your feet flat on the floor. Do not sit in one position for hours; get up and move.
Every 40 to 45 minutes, stand up, turn the neck gently left and right and stretch lightly, or walk about for a couple of minutes, which he says keeps the blood circulating.
See a doctor if neck or shoulder pain keeps coming back, if turning the neck is difficult, or if the pain starts to make the neck and shoulders go numb. The report is from Anandabazar Online.
