The traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) held an awareness programme with pupils at South Point School in Rampura, Dhaka, to make sure the next generation follows the law on the roads.
At the programme, DMP Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md Anisur Rahman called on the pupils to save half of one day's tiffin money so that a tree could be bought for each of them and a garden created with their participation.
The traffic education programme for class six pupils was held at the Rampura school on Thursday 21 May, and the pupils agreed to save their tiffin money to make the garden. Anisur Rahman instructed Farzana Haque, additional superintendent of police (ADC) of the Motijheel traffic division, to give the pupils every kind of help.
Road safety lessons
Urging awareness on various traffic issues, Anisur Rahman told the pupils: "We want our future generation to know about traffic laws and road safety, and to obey the law. In a country, first there is the family, from that our society, and from society the state. If each of us does not do our own job properly, nobody can achieve anything alone."
The pupils were given hands-on lessons on traffic law and various rules. Using road graffiti inside the school and a projector, they were also taught the signals of traffic lights and how to cross the road.
A garden from tiffin money
Speaking to the pupils, he asked how much money they brought from home each day for tiffin. When they answered Tk 100, he said: "Can't each of you buy and plant a tree with half of one day's tiffin money?" When the pupils said they could, Md Anisur Rahman said: "All right, each of you will give half of one day's tiffin money. With your money we will buy a tree for each of you and make a small garden nearby. You will look after that garden. And in future we can say this garden was made by you. You made a garden for society."
The DMP additional police commissioner (traffic) then instructed ADC Farzana Haque to give the pupils full support and to choose a site next to the school for the garden, and to stay in touch with the pupils.
