A young lakshmi pencha (barn owl), a species close to extinction, has been rescued in Biral, Dinajpur. It was rescued from a classroom at Boardhat College in the upazila on 16 January.

The owl is now being treated under Forest Department supervision at Ramsagar Dighi National Park in Dinajpur. The grey owl weighs about one kg.

Shahin, a college employee, saw the young owl when he went to open the classroom in the morning. He rescued it together with Bidhan Dutta, a lecturer in the college's English department.

The Forest Department was informed, and Biral Dharmapur forest beat officer Mohsin Ali came and took the owl away. It was then taken to Ramsagar Dighi National Park for better treatment, where it is being cared for.

Mohsin Ali said the rescued bird is a lakshmi pencha, a species close to extinction. Because it was unwell, it was handed over to Ramsagar Dighi National Park for better treatment, and it will be released into the wild once it recovers.
