Flooding from continuous rain and hill torrents has submerged the power substation of Dighinala upazila in Khagrachhari. The power department has temporarily cut supply for safety, and Dighinala upazila has been without electricity since the afternoon of 8 July.

According to local sources, days of heavy rain and hill torrents from upstream quickly flooded the transformer area of the Dighinala substation and its surroundings. As the water kept rising, the risk of electrical accidents grew, and the authorities decided to suspend supply temporarily, giving top priority to public safety.

The outage is disrupting daily activities at the upazila headquarters, in various unions and at residential hotels, resorts, businesses and ordinary customers in the Sajek tourist area. Mobile phone charging, internet services, the supply of safe water and other essential services are also affected.

Meanwhile, low-lying parts of Dighinala remain under water because of the continuing heavy rain and hill torrents, and many roads have gone under, disrupting communications.

Hillol Barua, sub-assistant engineer of the Dighinala Electricity Sales and Distribution Division, said the entire substation had gone under the torrent water. Supply has been suspended to avoid a major accident and for public safety, and it will be restored quickly once the water recedes and the substation equipment has been checked.

He added that once the floodwater recedes and the substation is declared safe, supply will be switched back on promptly after the necessary technical checks.
