Diabetes Patients Should Be Careful With These 5 Fruits

Mango, grapes, bananas, pineapple and cherries are high in sugar, so people with diabetes should choose fruit carefully and favour low-glycaemic options.

Crops

To keep diabetes under control, patients need to follow the right lifestyle, eating nutritious food and taking exercise. But some foods can be dangerous for people with diabetes.

Mango

It is hard to find anyone who does not like the mango, the king of fruits. This juicy, sweet fruit is also very good for health, but people with diabetes should be careful with it because it is high in sugar, which raises blood glucose. A medium-sized mango can contain up to 45 grams of sugar. This high glycaemic load can push blood sugar up quickly. Those who struggle to keep their diabetes under control should avoid it, and if they do want to eat it, they should do so only on a doctor's advice.

Grapes

Grapes taste sweet but are also quite sour. You may be surprised to learn that a cup of grapes contains about 23 grams of sugar. Grapes are a high-glycaemic-index fruit that raises blood glucose quickly, so people with diabetes should be careful when eating them.

Banana

The banana is a nutritious fruit, but it is high in carbohydrate and sugar. A medium-sized banana contains about 14 grams of sugar and 27 grams of carbohydrate, and very ripe bananas contain much more sugar. So people with diabetes should avoid this fruit.

Pineapple

Pineapple is rich in vitamins and enzymes such as bromelain, but it is also high in sugar. A cup of pineapple contains about 16 grams of sugar, which can raise blood sugar levels.

Cherries

Cherries are attractive to look at and have many health benefits, but they are not ideal for people with diabetes. A cup of cherries can contain about 18 grams of sugar, and eating too many can raise blood sugar quickly. So people with diabetes should eat cherries in moderation.

Choose low-glycaemic fruit

People with diabetes should choose fruit with a low glycaemic index, such as berries, apples, pears and kiwi, which are also good for them. Check your blood sugar regularly to understand which fruits are affecting your glucose levels.

Fruit is an essential part of a healthy diet, but people with diabetes should know the sugar content before eating it. Mango, grapes, bananas, pineapple and cherries are high-sugar fruits that, eaten regularly, will help push up blood sugar. So eat fruit with care and choose less sweet varieties.
