A smuggler named Ainu Mia (40) was killed by an elephant while bringing in sugar through the border area of Dhobaura, Mymensingh.

The incident happened around 12:30am on the night of Friday, 22 March, in Jigatala village of Ghoshgaon union. Ainu Mia was the son of the late Shamsul Haque of the same village.

Md Harun Or Rashid, chairman of Ghoshgaon union parishad, confirmed the information to Jago News.

Local union parishad member A Shahid Mia told Jago News that sugar has recently been coming in every day from India through smuggling routes. Around 12:30am on Friday night, people from the Garo community handed sacks of sugar to Ainu Mia near the border. On his way back with the sugar on a bicycle, he came face to face with an elephant. He tried to run, but could not escape. The elephant wrapped its trunk around him and tore one of his legs from his body, and Ainu Mia died on the spot. After the elephant left, locals found out and brought his body home.

Chairman Md Harun Or Rashid said Ainu Mia died after his leg was severed in an elephant attack while he was bringing in smuggled sugar.

The officer in charge (OC) of Dhobaura police station did not answer repeated calls to his number seeking comment.
