The nursery industry is expanding across the capital. Nurseries are meeting demand for inputs from rooftop farms, hobby gardens and commercial farms, with many entrepreneurs offering seedlings of hundreds of kinds of flowers, fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants, along with fertiliser and other inputs.
Big business behind the greenery
In the rush of city life, the green displays of new flower and fruit seedlings may catch only a passing glance. But behind them a large business has quietly grown up, supplying everything new rooftop farmers need.
Agargaon is one of the capital's largest nursery clusters, with more than 50 nurseries. Alongside common flower, fruit and medicinal seedlings, many rare species can be found there.
Quality concerns
Besides selling seedlings and inputs, nurseries also help spread technology. But alongside the benefits, consumers voice distrust and complaints. Those involved say training and technical support are needed for the nursery industry to grow further.
