Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has announced that waste in the capital will be removed within 24 hours of the Eid sacrifices. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Md Atiqul Islam said the DNCC had made full preparations to remove the waste within six hours of the sacrifices.

Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated across the country on Monday (17 June), and the mayors of both city corporations said the sacrificial waste would be removed on Eid day itself.

More than 10,000 cleaners will be deployed in the DNCC on Eid day to remove the blood, waste and refuse of sacrificed animals. The DNCC mayor, councillors and officials will supervise the work.

DNCC councillors will give polythene bags to animal owners on Eid day for the waste, and cleaners will later collect the filled bags.

For packing the waste, 940,000 polybags and 100,000 biodegradable polybags will be distributed. At the same time, 2,680 sacks of bleaching powder (25 kg a sack), 900 cans of Savlon (5 litres a can), 7,000 baskets and 1,250 litres of phenyl will be used.

Waste collected from the DNCC's 54 wards will be taken to the Aminbazar landfill, using 85 dump trucks, 21 payloaders, 18 water vehicles, two tyre dozers, five skid loaders, 140 pickups and 45 container carriers.

DNCC public relations officer Maqbul Hossain told Jagonews that all preparations were complete. The amount of waste could rise further this year compared with last year, he said, so the corporation had written to the police traffic division to keep the roads to the Aminbazar landfill free of congestion on Eid day.

Dhaka South City Corporation will begin removing waste at 2pm on Eid day, also with about 10,000 cleaners.

This year 9,497 workers will remove sacrificial waste in the DSCC's 75 wards — 4,997 of its own staff and 4,500 from primary waste collection service providers (PCSP). In all, 560 vehicles and machines will be deployed.

DSCC public relations officer Abu Naser told Jagonews that besides removing the waste, 40 tonnes of bleaching powder and 222 gallons of Savlon would be sprayed where animals were sacrificed, and 140,000 biodegradable bags would be distributed for packing the waste. He hoped that with everyone's cooperation the waste could be removed quickly.
