One crore date palm seeds are being sown across Jashore district. The seed-sowing programme was inaugurated on four and a half acres of government khas land in Chapatala village of Prembag union on Saturday (6 July) afternoon.

The programme was organised by the Abhaynagar upazila administration on the initiative of the Jashore district administration. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abraul Hasan Majumder inaugurated it, with Abhaynagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer K M Abu Nawshad presiding.

The deputy commissioner said the tradition captured in the saying "Jashore's glory is date palm juice" is at risk of disappearing because trees have been felled. That is why the initiative has been taken to sow one crore date palm seeds and plant about 15,000 date palm saplings across the district. The master plan was launched in Abhaynagar upazila and will be launched in other upazilas in stages.

He added that the seeds and saplings will be planted on government khas land, beside private fish enclosures, on the grounds of government and private schools, colleges and madrasas, on riverbanks and along various roads.

K M Abu Nawshad, Abhaynagar UNO and chair of the opening event, said 30 lakh date palm seeds would be sown across Abhaynagar in 30 days, and three thousand date palm saplings would be planted at the same time.
