'Cats Home Biraler Bari' has become a trusted name for cat lovers in Cumilla. When they travel, cat owners leave their pets here, and they pay nothing for it.
Every month a veterinarian sits there to treat pet cats, giving treatment and medicine for a token price. The home currently has 20 members, including Nabab, Simba, Pejkuni, Pushpa, Rud Gullit, Banjama, Vinicius, Jack, Minu, Duke, Camellia, Ronaldo, Priscilla, Mbappe, Muezza and a few guests.
Treatment for rescued animals
Cats Home Biraler Bari is at Nasir Tower on Nazrul Avenue in the city. Cat lover Lucky Rahman said there are hardly any good cat doctors in Cumilla, and no vets able to perform surgery could be found. "Since Cats Home Biraler Bari was set up, we have a place we trust. We get advice and treatment from them for any problem. Now no dog or cat in Cumilla city has to die untreated."
A woman named Shayla Shila told Jago News: "When I see helpless cats and dogs in the city, I rescue them. Getting them treated after rescue used to be hard. Now I can take them to Cats Home Biraler Bari and have them treated free of charge. I am delighted."
How it began
The founder, Mohammad Saif Uddin Roni, told Jago News that he took up cat keeping after seeing a social media post offering two cats for adoption. He contacted the poster and adopted the two cats, Nabab and Simba. At first, as a hobby, he collected a few cats from Cumilla, Narayanganj, Birulia in Savar and Shewrapara in Mirpur, and at the request of some people the number of cats now stands at 15.
He said owners in difficulty leave their beloved pets with them, thinking it a safe refuge, and pay no fee for board, food or treatment. "I provide this service for humanitarian reasons."
Many teams work across the country to rescue helpless animals. While teams in many places have sponsors, those in Cumilla have few, and for lack of money they cannot buy the equipment they need and must fund rescues themselves. Saif Uddin Roni of Drishtanto Foundation Cumilla and Cats Home Biraler Bari called on the well-off to sponsor rescue teams and stand by helpless animals.
Veterinarian Maruf Hasan Imran told Jago News that seeing Saif Uddin Roni's deep love for pets, he answered his call for humanitarian reasons. "I work so that these helpless animals, which cannot speak of their pain, do not die without treatment or from wrong treatment. I give one day a month to the Cumilla centre."
