A labourer named Zafar Alam, 70, has been killed by a wild elephant in Pekua, Cox's Bazar.

The incident happened in the evening of Tuesday, 25 July, in the Talimmar Khola area of Barbakia union. Zafar Alam lived in Chhonkhola village of the same union.

Eyewitness Joynal Abedin said a government plantation was being created in the Haludiar Ghona area under the Barbakia range of the Chattogram South Forest Division, and he and Zafar Alam were working there as labourers. On their way home after work, three wild elephants suddenly appeared in front of them. One of them attacked Zafar Alam, and he died on the spot.

Barbakia range officer Habibul Haque said saplings were being planted at the Holdiarghona plantation, and Zafar Alam was attacked by a wild elephant on his way home after work. The UNO and police have been informed and the body has been handed to his family. Efforts will be made to pay compensation to his family under forest department rules, he said.
