The fish landing centre and wholesale market beside the airport road in Cox's Bazar is crowded every day. Fishers bring fish from the sea and sell to wholesalers here, but they complain that pirates torment them. Asked about this, the Coast Guard could give no satisfactory answer, while the police administration said otherwise.
A broken landing centre
Pirates at sea, mismanagement on shore: the landing centre's shed has been out of use since 2012. Asked when a new centre will open after the old building is demolished, landing centre chief Md Shariful Islam could give no clear idea. The programme then contacted Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation chairman Dildar Ahmed by phone.
For sustainable development, building a modern fish landing centre is as urgent as ensuring the overall safety of fishers.
