Cox's Bazar is one of the country's leading tourist cities. The district town, on the shore of the world's longest sea beach, covers about 32 square kilometres. Thousands of tourists from home and abroad come every day to enjoy the beach, and as its commercial importance grows, the town keeps expanding. About 600 hotels large and small have been built, along with about 4,000 buildings, damaging nature and destroying natural beauty.

The extraordinary beauty of blue sea at the foot of green hills has begun to fade. In a town covered in buildings, the district administration has set an unusual example of keeping green: rooftop farming across a large area on top of its building.

Farming has been practised for four years on the 12,000-square-foot roof of the three-storey building. The main entrepreneur is Abul Monjur, deputy administrative officer at the Deputy Commissioner's office.
