Ten combine harvesters were distributed to farmers in Bhola Sadar upazila today at a 70 percent subsidy. The upazila agriculture office distributed the machines under the "Agricultural Mechanisation through Integrated Management" project for 2021-22.
The event at the agriculture office premises was chaired by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Mizanur Rahman, with Sadar upazila parishad chairman Md. Mosharef Hossain as chief guest. Upazila agriculture officer Md. Riazuddin, plant protection officer Bashir Ahmed and farmer Shafiq Mijhi spoke.
Why machines
The upazila agriculture officer said the government has taken the initiative to overcome the labour shortage in rice harvesting and to mechanise agriculture. Harvesting an acre with labourers costs farmers Tk 13,000 to Tk 14,000, while the machine will cost only Tk 4,000. A combine harvester can cut in one hour the amount of rice that 10 labourers cut in a day.
