In Parshuram upazila of Feni, a man whose wife was bitten by a venomous cobra beat the snake to death and took it in a bag to hospital along with her for treatment.

The incident happened at around noon on 6 September in East Saheb Nagar village of Mirzanagar union. The bitten woman, Sakina Begum, 70, has been admitted to Parshuram Upazila Health Complex.

Local sources said a black cobra bit Sakina Begum at around 11am while she was doing household work and tried to escape. Realising his wife had been bitten, her husband Zafar Ahmed beat the snake to death. To help her treatment and confirm the type of snake, he put the dead snake in a bag and took her to the upazila health complex. When he took it out in the emergency department, doctors confirmed it was a highly venomous cobra.

"My wife Sakina Begum was working outside the house while I was talking on the phone," Zafar Ahmed said. "Suddenly a black snake bit her and quickly moved away. I then beat it to death and put it in a bag, and brought it with me when I took my wife to Parshuram hospital."

Dr Iftekhar Hasan Bhuiyan, resident medical officer (RMO) of the health complex, said the elderly woman has been admitted and is under close observation. If clear signs of poisoning appear, antivenom and all other necessary treatment will be given immediately according to the guidelines.
