The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection fined five businesses around Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) a total of Tk 285,000 on Thursday afternoon, in a drive led by Foyez Ullah, deputy director for the Chattogram region, Desh Rupantor reports.
Inspectors found cooked food stored in the fridge with raw fish and meat at CMC Cafe next to the medical college, and food being prepared and served in filthy conditions; it was fined Tk 100,000. The Class Four Employees' Canteen was fined Tk 100,000 for similar conditions and for selling yoghurt without an expiry date on the pack.
In a drive against overpriced green coconuts sold amid an artificial shortage on the hospital grounds, Medicop Super Shop was found with no price list and charging too much for coconuts, and was fined Tk 10,000. For selling expired and unapproved foreign medicines, Swapna Medical Store was fined Tk 50,000 and JBL Surgical Unit-2 Tk 25,000.
Foyez Ullah said customers never get to see the kitchens, and the kitchens were in very bad condition. The businesses were warned as well as fined; inspectors will return, and stronger action will follow if nothing changes. Drives around CMCH will continue regularly to protect the public and stop patients being exploited, he said.
