A civet of a near-extinct species was caught in a residential area of Ishwarganj, Mymensingh. The animal was rescued from Shimultoli in Char Hosenpur, in the municipality, on the evening of Saturday, 4 June.

Md Shahidullah, Ishwarganj upazila forest officer, said the civet tried to catch a chicken to eat around noon. Several local boys, including Prince, Sagar, Bappi and Siam, caught the animal and informed the Forest Department, which then rescued it from the spot.

He said that although the nocturnal civet is a fruit-eater, it also eats insects, snails, eggs, chicks, birds, small animals, palm fruit and date palm sap. It was caught by the boys while looking for food. The animal is now being kept at the divisional forest officer's office.
