A woman bitten by a snake came to hospital carrying the dead snake with her. Doctors say she is out of danger for now.

It happened at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital on the afternoon of Sunday 30 April. The woman is Anjana Begum, 30, wife of businessman Zahid Hasan of Joyrampur village in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga.

Zahid Hasan said: "In the afternoon my father brought some dry bamboo home from the field for fuel. My wife was putting it in the kitchen when a snake hiding in the bamboo bit her on the palm. We quickly brought her to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital and had her admitted. As we had killed the snake, we brought it along to help with the treatment."

Wahed Mahmud Robin, a doctor in the hospital's emergency department, said the family brought the woman in with a dead snake. She was given first treatment and kept under observation for several hours. "For now we believe she is out of danger," he said.

Bakhtiar Hamid, founder of the Chuadanga environmental group Pankouri, said the snake is a bet anchra, known in English as the bronze-back tree snake. It is completely non-venomous and there is nothing to fear, he said, adding that he expects the woman to recover with first aid.

He said the snake lives mainly in trees and many people mistake it for a gourd tendril. It is restless by nature and flees fast when it sees people, but it sometimes bites when it cannot escape.
