A housewife named Josna Begum, 45, has died of a snakebite in Alamdanga, Chuadanga. On the same day, a child named Saif, 8, was injured in Jibannagar.

Josna Begum, wife of Shahin Ali of Biswaspara in Naolamari village, Khaskarara union, Alamdanga upazila, died at around 6pm on Monday, 24 July.

According to her family, a yellow venomous snake bit her on the leg while she was working in the cowshed at home in the evening. She did not realise she had been bitten. When her condition worsened, family members took her to the emergency department of Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, where the doctor on duty, Zobaida Zaman (Joya), declared her dead.

At about the same time, Saif was bitten while playing in the yard of his home at Rajanagar in Jibannagar upazila. When he screamed, family members took him to the emergency department of Chuadanga Sadar Hospital. He is the son of police member Masud and a class one pupil at Jibannagar Pourashava Kindergarten School.

His mother, Shilpi Khatun, said: "My son was bitten by a snake while playing in the yard. He told me the snake was yellow and black. When I found out, I immediately told Saif's father and brought him to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital."

Zobaida Zaman, the doctor on duty in the hospital's emergency department, said the child had been given first aid and was under observation in the children's ward. It was too early to say whether he was out of danger.
