About 15kg of deer meat has been seized on the Chittagong University (CU) campus. The meat was being carried hidden under cucumbers in two baskets.
The man carrying it dumped the meat and fled in the university's Jarultola area at around 2.45pm on Thursday (30 September). No one has been detained so far.
How the meat was found
According to eyewitnesses, a man was leaving the campus carrying cucumbers in two baskets. Ramzan Hossain Apu, a student of the university's international relations department, called him over to buy some cucumbers and asked the price. The man refused to give a price and at one point said he was taking the cucumbers home. This made the student suspicious.
When he was questioned further, the man dropped the baskets and ran away. When the baskets fell to the ground, the meat came out from underneath one of them, and meat was then found in the other basket as well. It was being carried in about 15 polythene bags.
The proctorial body and police then arrived, seized the two baskets with the meat and took them to the proctor's office. According to the proctor's office, there is a CCTV camera at the spot, but it has been out of order since Wednesday (29 September) because new cameras are being installed.
University proctor Dr Rabiul Hasan Bhuiyan told Jago News: "We have seized the meat. We have spoken to the forest department about it. It will be sent there."
