A huge python has been rescued from Chittagong University (CU). The snake is 10 feet long and weighs about 14 kg.

Rafiqul Islam, a master's student in CU's zoology department and a researcher at the Venom Research Centre, rescued the snake at 4.30pm on Saturday, 12 August, from the home of Chand Box in Jobra village on the university campus.

After the rescue, the snake was released on an uninhabited hill behind the university's Bangabandhu Hall.

Rafiqul Islam told Jagonews24 the snake is a Burmese python, about 10 feet long and weighing around 14 kg. It entered Chand Box's home around noon on Friday. "They told us the huge snake was up in a tree. We asked them to let us know when it came down into the yard. They called us on Saturday afternoon and we rescued it," he said.

He said pythons are not venomous. There are many superstitions about them, such as the belief that their breath makes the body rot, but none has any scientific basis.

Rafiqul added that Chittagong University is surrounded by hills, an ideal habitat for pythons. They sometimes come into populated areas in search of food, but do no harm if people do not disturb them.
