Chattogram City Corporation and Bangladesh Bank will work together to make transactions at two of the city's sacrificial animal markets cashless.

On Thursday (23 May), a Bangladesh Bank delegation presented the plan to Chattogram City Mayor Bir Muktijoddha Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury. This year there will be digital transaction booths at the Sagarika cattle market and the Nur Nagar Housing cattle market.

The delegation said the central bank has taken the initiative for cashless transactions at two sacrificial animal markets of Chattogram City Corporation to reduce the risks of cash dealings around the markets and to implement the government's plan to build a Smart Bangladesh.

At the meeting, the mayor said work is under way to turn Chattogram into a smart city in line with the Prime Minister's plan to build a cashless Bangladesh. Digital services of this kind will help realise Chattogram's huge economic potential. He promised land and electricity for the digital transaction booths at the markets. Buyers and sellers at the markets will be able to use ATMs, mobile financial services, digital banking and other facilities at the two booths.

In 2023, Bangladesh Bank and Chattogram City Corporation arranged cashless transactions at two Chattogram cattle markets for the first time. But many complained that none of the cashless services promised that first time were delivered.
