Chattogram City Corporation mayor and freedom fighter Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury has called on people to plant trees, as directed by the Prime Minister, to save the country by tackling climate change.

He made the call on Thursday (13 July) while saplings were being distributed to various educational institutions at an event organised by the Chattogram City Unit of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, with the support of Youth Red Crescent, Chattogram.

Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said: "To save the country by tackling climate change, we will plant trees in every possible place, as the Prime Minister has directed. By distributing 3,000 saplings today, the Red Crescent is playing an important role in greening. We can benefit by planting fruit and medicinal trees."

The programme was inaugurated by the society's treasurer MA Salam. It was presided over by Md Alamgir Parvez, vice-chairman of the Chattogram City Unit, and panel mayor Giasuddin attended as special guest.

The event was moderated by Abdul Jabbar, secretary of the Chattogram City Unit. Also present were Chattogram City Red Crescent executive board members Mohsin Uddin Chowdhury Faisal, Md Mosharaful Haque Chowdhury and Md Imtiaz, Youth Red Crescent Chattogram youth chief Istakul Islam Chowdhury Ishan, and teachers from various schools and colleges.
