Prices of vegetables, fish and chicken keep rising in Chattogram's kitchen markets. At Bahaddarhat kitchen market on Friday, vegetables were on average Tk 10 a kg dearer than a week earlier and various fish about Tk 20 a kg dearer.

Broiler chicken, Tk 170-180 a kg a week ago depending on the market, sold for Tk 180-190 on Friday. Up Tk 10-15 a kg, Sonali chicken sold for Tk 320-350, cock Tk 260-300, layer Tk 280-320 and deshi chicken Tk 600-700. Beef was Tk 850-950 a kg and goat meat Tk 1,200.

Among vegetables, aubergine sold for Tk 80-100 a kg, cucumber and okra Tk 70-80, pointed gourd Tk 60-70, spiny gourd Tk 80-90, yardlong bean Tk 80-100, flat bean Tk 100-120, bottle gourd Tk 80-90, papaya Tk 30-40, sweet pumpkin Tk 50-60 and green chilli Tk 150-180.

At the fish stalls, loitta cost Tk 200-220 a kg, rui Tk 350-380, catla Tk 300-400, tilapia Tk 250-280, pangas Tk 180-220, pabda Tk 350-400, koi Tk 280-300 and coral Tk 600-700; pomfret and shrimp ranged from Tk 600 to Tk 1,200 by size.

"Since the terrible flood in Chattogram, prices of vegetables, fish and meat have been rising unchecked," said Nasir Uddin, a private-sector employee who shops regularly at Bahaddarhat. The latest excuse, he said, was higher transport costs after the fuel price rise.

Heavy rain and hill runoff caused severe flooding in Chattogram in early July, badly damaging vegetable fields and fish projects, and the government raised the price of all fuels last Sunday.
