Police have rescued two spectacled langur babies in Karnaphuli, Chattogram, and arrested bus supervisor Russell Chowdhury alias Sajal (45), accused of trafficking the endangered animals.

He was arrested at about 11.45pm on Monday (29 April) in the Moizzartek area on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway. He was carrying the two langur babies on a bus from Cox's Bazar to Naogaon. He is the son of the late Mozaffar Chowdhury of Mahadebpur upazila, Naogaon.

Kazi Md Tarek Aziz, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police media and public relations division, told Jago News that the two babies were recovered in a search of a passenger bus at the Akhtaruzzaman Chattar in Moizzartek at about 11.45pm on Monday. The supervisor involved was arrested, and a regular case was filed against him at Karnaphuli police station under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act. He was sent to court on Tuesday morning, and the langur babies were handed to the Forest Department on the court's order.

Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury, divisional forest officer of the Chattogram Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation division, told Jago News that Karnaphuli police had placed the two babies in their custody. They will be kept in quarantine at the Chakaria Safari Park. As they are still young, they will be protected and made fit before being released into the safari park.
