A seven-year-old girl named Srimoti Jyoti has died of a snakebite in Chapainawabganj. The incident took place on the afternoon of 17 June in Pawel village of Jhilim union in Sadar upazila.

Jyoti was the daughter of Nayan Karmakar of the area. Dr Abdul Kader, on duty at the 250-bed district hospital, confirmed the death.

Locals alleged that after the snakebite the child was first taken to a village ojha (healer) for incantations, and that she died there through lack of treatment.

Citing the family, Dr Abdul Kader said a child bitten by a snake was brought to the hospital dead. She was brought in several hours after being bitten, and after examination she was found to be dead.
