Hail has damaged mango and paddy in Nachole and Gomostapur upazilas of Chapainawabganj.

Hail fell for several minutes in parts of Gomostapur and Nachole upazilas on Thursday afternoon (1 May).

Farmers said heavy rain fell for half an hour in several upazilas of the district, along with hail, which will damage mango and paddy. Hail was especially widespread in Parbatipur union of Gomostapur upazila. Sadar and Shibganj upazilas had only rain, which will help mangoes grow quickly and stop them dropping.

Atikur Rahman, a resident of Nachole upazila, said the mangoes had grown large, and hail at this stage would damage them and knock them all down.

Shafiqul Alam, a paddy farmer in Gomostapur upazila, said: "I was getting ready to cut the paddy in a few days. Now the hail has flattened the plants and the yield will fall, so I am worried."

Dr Md Iyasin Ali, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Chapainawabganj, said the hail would damage paddy, and the plants flattened by the brief storm would yield less. He could not give an immediate estimate of the losses.
