Chapainawabganj district is known above all for its mangoes, and this year its fruit is again crossing the country's borders for markets abroad.

On Monday (29 May) four tonnes of mangoes were sent to Sweden and three tonnes of Khirshapati mangoes to London.

The fruit is being exported by M/s MBB Agro, a fruit and vegetable exporter in Nachole upazila of Chapainawabganj. The company hopes to export more than 100 tonnes of mangoes this year.

The company's owner, Md Badruddoza, told Jago News: "I have been exporting mangoes and different vegetables to Sweden since 2012, and I am doing so again this year. So far I have sent four tonnes to Sweden and three tonnes to London."

"I mainly live in Sweden," he said. "Traders in Stockholm place orders for mangoes with me. I then pack the mangoes in Nachole and send them. They reach the buyers from the airport in Sweden."

Palash Sarkar, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Chapainawabganj, said: "We know about Badruddoza. He exports not only mangoes but various vegetables. The agriculture department is giving all-round support for sending mangoes abroad."

"We are trying to increase the volume of mango exports," he said. "Since this district's mangoes are exportable and completely chemical-free, we hope exports will grow further."

Mangoes have been planted on 37,855 hectares in the district this year, with a production target of 425,000 tonnes.
