Chapainawabganj district administration has again this year set no date for picking and marketing mangoes. Mangoes may be picked from the trees as soon as they are mature.

The administration said, however, that strict action will be taken against anyone who markets immature mangoes.

The decision was taken with the agreement of those concerned at a meeting on the afternoon of 11 May in the deputy commissioner's conference room, held to discuss a mango calendar and the production, marketing and transport of safe, poison-free mangoes.

Deputy Commissioner Abu Saleh Md Musa Jangi presided. Those present included Dr Yasin Ali, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE); Dr Saraf Uddin, senior scientific officer at the Regional Horticulture Research Station; Additional Deputy Commissioner Nakib Hasan Tarafdar; Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Maruf Afzal Rajan; and mango growers and traders.

Chapainawabganj has 37,487 hectares of mango orchards this season, with a production target of 458,012 tonnes.
