More than 376 metric tonnes of mangoes have been exported from Chapainawabganj this year, helping growers overcome losses and turn a profit.

According to the agriculture department, this year has seen the most mangoes sent abroad. The exports by variety were: Khirsapat 53.4 tonnes, Langra 13.5, Harivanga 31.60, Bombai one tonne, Amrapali 138.60, Kohitur 0.5, Lakshmanbhog 0.5, BARI-4 8.5, Fazli 45 tonnes, Banana 7 tonnes, Gourmati 29.9 and Katimon 46.5 tonnes.

Palash Sarkar, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Chapainawabganj, said exports had risen compared with last year. "I hope we are able to produce export-quality mangoes. More doors must be opened for exporting mangoes abroad; then growers will profit. That is what we are working towards."

He added that 132 tonnes of mangoes had been exported from Chapainawabganj last year and 376 tonnes this year, more than double. "We hope even more will be exported next year."

Chapainawabganj district has mango orchards on 37,855 hectares. The production target this year has been set at 425,000 tonnes.
