Mango exports from Chapainawabganj, known as the mango capital, have begun for this season. The season opened on Friday afternoon (5 June) with two tonnes of Khirsapat and Banana Mango sent to Italy.

The mangoes are being exported by grower Shamim Reza Sohag of Chatra village in Chakkirti union, Shibganj upazila. He says his orchard produces about 50 tonnes of exportable mangoes, but not all of it can be sent abroad, which denies him the profit he hopes for.

Shamim Reza Sohag said he started growing export-quality mangoes in 2022. In 2023 he sent 12 tonnes abroad for the first time, and in 2025 he exported 35 tonnes to various countries. This time he began exports at the very start of the season, sending two tonnes to Italy on Friday.

Dr Yasin Ali, deputy director of the district Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), said: "Work is under way to expand foreign markets by producing safe, quality mangoes. Demand for Chapainawabganj mangoes is growing in Europe and other countries."

According to the district DAE, mangoes have been grown on 37,487 hectares in Chapainawabganj this year. The district has set a production target of about 4,58,912 tonnes.
