Chapainawabganj's Langra and Ashwina mangoes are set to receive geographical indication (GI) recognition. The Regional Horticulture Research Station in Chapainawabganj applied with almost all the necessary data, and the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks under the Ministry of Industries is now publishing the information in its journal. If there are no objections, the products should be recognised within the next two months.

Dr Md Mokhlesur Rahman, chief scientific officer of the Regional Horticulture Research Station in Chapainawabganj, confirmed this.

He said the application for GI recognition of Chapainawabganj's Langra and Ashwina mangoes was made in 2017, and its final report should arrive within a day or two. "We hope to get GI recognition very soon. If we do, four of Chapainawabganj's mangoes will have GI recognition," he said.

Mokhlesur Rahman said that earlier, in 2019, the Khirsapat mango, and in 2022 the Fazli mango, won GI recognition for both Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts. The application for Langra and Ashwina was made with all the data, and he hopes that if there are no objections the recognition will come within a few days.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chapainawabganj Ahmed Mahbub-ul-Islam said their latest meeting was told about GI recognition for the two mangoes and that it would come very soon.

A product is recognised as a country's geographical indication product when the soil, water, climate and culture of a place play the most important role in producing it. Just as a trademark identifies a particular person or company, a GI identifies a particular product of a country. The biggest advantage of GI status is in branding on the world market, which puts a GI product ahead of other products of similar quality.
