Forty Khirsapat mango growers in Chapainawabganj are set to be recognised as producers of a geographical indication (GI) product.

Zillur Rahman, deputy registrar (GI) of the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, announced this at noon on Thursday (25 May) at a seminar titled "Ways to overcome the challenges of commercialising geographical indication products" in the Shibganj upazila parishad auditorium.

Earlier that morning, the names of 40 of the district's mango growers were registered for recognition as producers of the GI Khirsapat mango.

Speaking at the seminar, Zillur Rahman said that, through the government's efforts, a service to register producers of the GI Khirsapat mango had been launched at the producers' doorstep. Growers would benefit and Khirsapat cultivation in Chapainawabganj would improve further.

He said branding of the Khirsapat as a GI product would increase, making Chapainawabganj's Khirsapat better known at home and abroad, and producers would then get fair prices.

Other speakers included Khondoker Mostafizur Rahman, registrar of the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks; deputy registrar Zillur Rahman; Shibganj upazila nirbahi officer Abul Hayat; and Kamrul Islam, chief scientific officer of the Chapainawabganj agricultural research institute.
