Chapainawabganj's Khirsapat mangoes are being exported to England right at the start of the season. On Sunday afternoon (25 May), one metric tonne of mangoes was sent to England from the orchard of a trader named Kamrul Hasan in the Jamtala area of Sadar upazila.

Kamrul Hasan said he was happy to be able to export mangoes to England for the first time at the start of the season. The mangoes were picked from the trees and packed that day, and were to be sent to Dhaka in the afternoon, from where they would go on to England.

Yasin Ali, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), said growers are being given every kind of guidance on exporting mangoes. Government-level export activities will begin after 28 May, he said. So far only one grower, Kamrul Hasan, is exporting mangoes abroad on his own initiative.

According to the agriculture department, Chapainawabganj has mango orchards on 37,000 hectares, with a production target of 3 lakh 86 thousand tonnes. Last year the district exported 133 metric tonnes of mangoes.
