The number of snakebite patients is rising in Chandpur at the end of the monsoon season. Patients from across the district come to Chandpur government hospital for treatment every day. From 1 October to 16 October, about 50 patients were treated at the hospital, and in the past 24 hours 11 people were bitten, one of whom died.
The dead man was Based Patwari (70), of the Mohamaya area of Chandpur Sadar. After he was bitten, relatives took him to Chandpur Government General Hospital on Tuesday, 15 October, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Patients' relatives said venomous snakes bit them in their kitchens, at ponds and while working in the fields, but they could not say what kind of snake it was.
Patients in the past 24 hours
According to the hospital, those treated for snakebites at Chandpur Government General Hospital in the past 24 hours were Sagar (34) from Matlab Dakshin; Abdul Hakim (56), son of the late Newaz of Sapdi village; Jahangir Khan (32), son of the late Abdul Majid of Dakshin Balia Bakharpur village; Sagar (30), son of Kadir of Baradia Arong Bazar in Matlab Dakshin; Amin (52), son of Abdur Rahim of Gulisha village in Farakkabad; Habibur Rahman (20), son of Mizanur Rahman of the Baburhat area; Shahana (57), wife of Selimia of Safarmali Dasadi village in Chandpur Sadar; Rozina Begum (35), wife of Shahjan Mia of Dhanua village in Faridganj upazila; Omar Gazi (32) of Matlab Lanir upazila; and Al Amin (22), son of Alamgir of Gridkalindia village in Faridganj upazila.
Al Amin, who was bitten, said: "I was working next to the house when a snake suddenly came and bit my left foot. I first went to a kabiraj (traditional healer) for treatment and then went to the hospital."
Dr Belal Ahmed, medical officer at Chandpur government hospital, said no patients bitten by Russell's vipers had come to the hospital, but most had been bitten by venomous snakes. Most patients went home after receiving antivenom. People need to be a little careful at this time, he said, and there will be no risk if snakebite victims are brought quickly to a government hospital instead of to a kabiraj.
