Markets for sacrificial animals have begun in Chandpur, and relatively small local cattle are arriving. Ordinary buyers come but haggle and leave. Traders make up most of the crowd at these markets.
This was learned from buyers and sellers at the Shafarmali sacrificial animal market in Bishnupur union of Chandpur Sadar upazila on Monday afternoon (3 June).
The Shafarmali market lies about 6 km north of the district town and is held every Monday. But this was the first market of the Eid-ul-Azha season. Thousands of local and foreign bulls, bullocks and cows filled the whole market, and many people had also brought goats raised at home for sale. Most of the farmers and sellers here come from the char areas west of the Meghna river and from Shariatpur district.
What buyers and sellers said
Shahid Ullah Sarkar came from Matlab Dakshin upazila with his business partner to buy cattle. "A lot of cattle have come to market today. I am looking at prices and will buy if the price suits. Cattle feed is expensive in the market, which is why farmers are asking somewhat higher prices," he said.
Cattle trader Rabiul came from Shahrasti with several partners to check prices at Shafarmali. "I went round the whole market. Two traders liked two bulls each, four in all. We bought the four at prices from Tk 1 lakh 4 thousand to Tk 1 lakh 10 thousand," he said.
A farmer named Munna brought four large Indian cattle from Bakila in Hajiganj upazila. "I bought 11 Indian bulls before the last Ramadan and kept them on the farm, feeding them local grass and concentrates. Seven have been sold. Each of these four has been offered Tk 2 lakh 15 thousand. I will sell if I get Tk 2 lakh 30 thousand each," he said.
Abdur Rahman brought seven local cattle from Shariatpur. "Buyers are very few at this market today. Some seasonal traders have come, but they bargain and leave. My cattle are worth from Tk 40 thousand to Tk 1 lakh," he said.
Md Rakibul Hasan came from the char areas west of the Meghna. "I raised several bulls at home and brought them for sale. There is a shortage of buyers in the market. I hope sales will pick up at the next haat," he said.
