More than a hundred families in West Ludhua village, Matlab Uttar upazila, Chandpur, say they have long suffered from the waste and stench of a poultry farm. Residents allege the farm's droppings and other waste are dumped into nearby canals and ponds, making the canal water unusable and stopping pond owners from farming fish, Krishi Shomoy reports.
Nur Nabi Munshi, Shahida Begum, Shamsunnahar and other residents said they do not object to a poultry farm in a settled area, but its waste must be managed properly. Even with doors and windows shut, they say, there is no escape from the smell.
Nure Alam Bepari said children and older people in particular suffer from breathing trouble, nausea and headaches. Residents have filed a written complaint with the upazila executive officer. The report carries no comment from the farm.
Sharmita Ahmed Lia, an inspector at the Department of Environment in Chandpur, said the department will inspect and take action once it receives a complaint.
