Another venomous Russell's viper (chandrabora) has been found in Eklaspur union of Matlab Uttar upazila in Chandpur. Locals later beat the snake to death.

The snake was caught on the morning of Tuesday, 28 May, in the Nayanagar Bottola area of Eklaspur union. Earlier, on 16 May, another snake of the same species was found in the Borchar area of the same union.

Locals and eyewitnesses said snakes had been a menace for several days in Borchar, the char land on the western side of the Meghna river in the upazila. But this time a Russell's viper was seen on the eastern bank.

They said the snake was spotted at midday on the bank of the Meghna in the Nayanagar Bottola area of Eklaspur, and locals then beat it to death.

Eyewitness Humayun Miyaji said: "Because the water in the Meghna rose with Cyclone Remal, the snake came up onto the sandy field. As it was moving away, I called people. They came and beat it to death."

Eklaspur union chairman Mofizul Islam Munna Dhali said snakes had been caught in various places in the union over the past few days, and people were being made aware.

Hasibul Islam, resident medical officer (RMO) of the Matlab Uttar upazila health complex, said the Russell's viper is one of the venomous snakes of the chandrabora or ulu bora family. Its venom stops the blood from clotting, and death follows much suffering from excessive bleeding.
