A housewife named Ranu Begum (45) has died after being bitten by a venomous snake in Matlab Dakshin, Chandpur.

The incident happened on Friday night (1 August) at the Pradhania house in Upadhi village of the upazila. Ranu Begum was the wife of the late Idris Ali Khan of the village.

Her daughter Nasima said: "On Friday night my brother's daughter dropped a grape while eating and it rolled under the bed. When my mother went to get it from under the bed, a snake bit her. We took her, seriously injured, to Chandpur General Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared her dead."

Neighbour Abdul Matin said Ranu Begum died on the way to hospital, and she was buried after her janaza at 9am on Saturday.

Md Saleh Ahammad, officer-in-charge (OC) of Matlab Dakshin police station, said: "We have no knowledge of such news. But if we receive any complaint about the incident, necessary action will be taken."
