Cassius, the world's largest captive crocodile, has died at a wildlife sanctuary in Queensland, Australia. He was 5.48 metres (18 feet) long and is believed to have been more than 110 years old.

Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat said on social media on Saturday (2 November) that Cassius's health had been declining since 15 October. The sanctuary said he was very old and was thought to have lived much longer than other wild crocodiles.

The sanctuary's website says Cassius was moved to the sanctuary from the Northern Territory in 1987, and crocodiles are an important part of the tourism industry there.

Cassius was a saltwater crocodile. Because of his enormous size he was recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest crocodile in captivity.

He took the title in 2013 after the death of Lolong, a crocodile in the Philippines. Lolong was 6.17 metres (20 feet 3 inches) long.

Mourning his death, the sanctuary said Cassius would be deeply missed, but its love for him and his memory would remain unbroken in its heart.
