California creates a state label for foods that are not ultra-processed

Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill creating certification of non-ultraprocessed foods, overseen by the California Department of Public Health through accredited third-party certifiers by June 2029.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a bill creating a label for foods that are not ultra-processed. "Like the USDA Organic label, this new seal will provide consumers with clear, trustworthy information," said Assembly member Jesse Gabriel, who introduced the bill.

The California Department of Public Health will oversee certification of products meeting the state's non-ultraprocessed standard, approving and accrediting third-party certifiers, which it must do by 1 June 2029. Products must be recertified at least every three years.

"Consumers deserve labels they can trust," said Bernadette Del Chiaro of the Environmental Working Group, adding that families will now have a simple way to tell which foods are "closer to what comes from a kitchen rather than a factory".
