A one-and-a-half-year-old girl named Lamia has been injured by a jackal bite in Nabinagar, Brahmanbaria.
The incident happened on Sunday afternoon (18 June) in Kurighar village of Natghar union in the upazila.
The injured Lamia is the daughter of Sohel Mia of the Moddho Uttarpara area of Kurighar village.
Jackal came from a jute field
Lamia's grandmother, Amena Begum, said Lamia was playing with geese in the yard of the house in the afternoon when a jackal came into the yard from a jute field next to the house and bit her on the head and face. When family members came running at the child's screams, the jackal fled. Lamia was taken to the upazila health complex, which referred her to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital.
Amena Begum added that jackals are a menace in the area. They eat the ducks and chickens from homes, and no one, including people, is safe from them, she said.
Toukatul Islam Chayan, a paediatrician at Brahmanbaria General Hospital, said a child had been injured by a jackal bite. She was given first aid and advised to take the rabies vaccine.
